Commercial Business License Information

Six steps to get licensed and open for business in West Point.

All commercial businesses in West Point are required to have a valid business license issued by West Point City. The license must be obtained before you begin conducting business.

Licenses are non-transferable between owners or locations, and must be renewed every year.

To obtain a Commercial Business License, complete each of the six steps below. Applications submitted before these steps are finished will be placed on hold.

Fee Amount Notes
Commercial Business License Application $85 Due with your application
Late Renewal $25 Applies after 30 days late

Step 1: Find a Location & Verify Zoning

Before proceeding with your business idea, verify that your business will fully comply with all land use and zoning ordinances at your desired location in West Point.

Contact the City's Planning Department with any questions about land use and zoning at 801-776-0970 or planning@westpointcity.org.

Step 2: Register Your Business Name with the State of Utah

Once you have secured a physical location, register your business name with the Utah Department of Commerce:

State registration alone does not authorize you to conduct business in West Point. If you have questions, contact the Utah Department of Commerce at 801-530-4849.

Step 3: Register Your Business with the Utah State Tax Commission

Most businesses selling goods and products (opens in a new tab), or providing select services (opens in a new tab), must be registered with the Utah State Tax Commission (opens in a new tab) for a Sales and Use Tax Account, and must have West Point listed as an outlet location under their state sales tax ID number.

Register with the Utah State Tax Commission (opens in a new tab)

Important: your business license application will not be processed unless you provide your state sales tax ID number and your West Point City location is listed as an outlet location.

If you have questions, contact the Utah State Tax Commission at 801-297-2200.

Step 4: Obtain Building Permits & Pass Required Inspections

Obtain all relevant building permits and pass all required inspections. All new construction requires building permits, building inspections, and fire inspections. Anything beyond paint and carpet in an existing building will likely require permits and inspections as well.

All inspections must be passed before a business license can be issued. For new construction, a Certificate of Occupancy must be issued before a West Point City business license can be issued.

Contact the West Point City Building Department with any questions at 801-776-0970.

Step 5: Obtain All Relevant County, State & Federal Licenses, Permits & Inspections

Obtain all county, state, and federal licenses and permits required for your business type, and pass any required inspections. Businesses are entirely responsible for knowing which licenses and permits apply to them and for obtaining all of them.

You must upload proof that you have received all required county, state, and federal licenses or permits when you submit your West Point City business license application.

The agencies below are a starting point. This list is not exhaustive.

Step 6: Apply for a West Point City Business License

Once the steps above are complete, submit your commercial business license application using the links below.

If you submit before finishing the earlier steps, your application will be held until they are complete — specifically until you have 1) passed required inspections and received occupancy approval from the West Point City Building Department, and 2) received all relevant county, state, and federal licenses or permits.

Please allow up to two weeks for review. Invoices are emailed to the address provided on the application. Once you receive your business license, you are approved to open for business.

We hope you find great success doing business in West Point!
