Every home-based business in West Point needs a free West Point City business license before it starts operating. Licenses must be renewed every year and can't be transferred to a new owner or address.
Apply online for a Home Occupation License (opens in a new tab) (complete the steps below first; incomplete applications are put on hold)
Fees
- Home-based business license: Free
- Late renewal (more than 15 days late): $25
- Conditional Use Permit (major home occupations only): $75
Step 1: Check Zoning and Land Use
Make sure your business is allowed at your address under West Point's zoning and land use rules. Questions? Contact Community Development at 801-776-0970 or planning@westpointcity.org.
Step 2: Determine Whether Your Business Is a Minor or Major Home Occupation
A home business should have little or no impact on the neighborhood. See West Point City Code 17.70.140 (opens in a new tab) for permitted uses.
-
Minor home occupation: uses a small part of the home, with few customers and employees.
-
Major home occupation: more customers, more traffic, more of the home used, or outside employees. Examples include dance studios, daycares, preschools, and instructional classes.
Major home occupations need a Conditional Use Permit before you apply for a business license, and most also need to pass a building inspection. Call Community Development at 801-776-0970 for permits or inspections.
Step 3: Register With the State of Utah
Unless you're a sole proprietor, register your business name with the Utah Department of Commerce. State registration alone does not allow you to operate in West Point.
Sole proprietors can either register with the state (a DBA works) or upload proof that you live at the business address, such as a utility bill or driver's license, with your application.
Step 4: Register With the Utah State Tax Commission
Most businesses that sell goods or certain services (opens in a new tab) need a Utah sales and use tax account with West Point listed as an outlet location. You'll enter your sales tax ID number on your application. Applications without it won't be processed.
Step 5: Get Any Other Required Licenses, Permits, and Inspections
You are responsible for getting every county, state, and federal license or permit your business type requires, and for uploading proof with your application. The agencies below are a starting point, not a complete list.
